Man crossing 405 Freeway struck and killed in Irvine

A man trying to cross the southbound 405 Freeway in Irvine was hit by a car and killed Monday night.
Officials of the Orange County Fire Authority say the accident occurred at 9:06 p.m. north of Lake Forest Drive. Arriving paramedics pronounced the 52-year-old man dead at 9:18 p.m. His name has not been released.
A spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol said it was not immediately known why the man was trying to cross the freeway.
Officers shut down southbound freeway traffic at Bake Parkway and issued a SigAlert.
