In O.C., GOP challenger Kim outpolls Assembly incumbent Quirk-Silva

Reporting from Sacramento — In Orange County, Republican challenger Young Kim topped incumbent Sharon Quirk-Silva (D-Fullerton) in their Assembly primary race, as both candidates — facing no other opposition — moved forward to places on the November ballot.
The closely watched contest will be key for Democrats’ efforts in the fall to keep their supermajority in the Assembly.
Quirk-Silva, a first-term lawmaker, won the seat in 2012 in an upset victory over Republican incumbent Chris Norby.
She had more than $500,000 in the bank as of May 17 for her reelection bid. Kim, also a strong fundraiser, had $470,000 cash on hand in the last reporting period.
Democrats and Republicans have nearly equal registration in the 65th Assembly district — 37% to 35% – with 23% of registered voters stating no party preference.
