Assemblyman Muratsuchi to seek reelection, not Senate seat

SACRAMENTO — Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance) said Thursday he will run for reelection rather than join a crowded field of contenders for a state Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Ted Lieu.

Lieu’s decision to run for Congress has attracted candidates including Sandra Fluke, a nationally known activist for women’s rights, and possibly former Assemblywoman Betsy Butler.

Muratsuchi said he and his family love living in the South Bay and serving the 66^th Assembly District.

“After years of budget cuts and partisan bickering, California is coming back,” he said in a statement. “ I look forward to continuing to fight for good jobs, good schools, safe neighborhoods and a clean and healthy environment.”

Lieu, a Democrat from Torrance, is a candidate for the congressional seat being vacated by the retirement of Rep. Henry Waxman, sparking interest by several candidates in the open Senate seat.

Democrat Vito Imbasciani, a state surgeon for the California Army National Guard, has also announced his candidacy for the 26^th Senate District seat, while others are weighing a possible run.
