Ron Nehring to challenge Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom in fall
- Share via
Former state Republican chairman Ron Nehring won a spot on the November ballot for lieutenant governor and will face Democratic incumbent Gavin Newsom.
Newsom, former mayor of San Francisco, is strongly favored for reelection.
He recently reported more than $2 million on hand for the campaign, far more than Nehring.
Newsom, 46, has openly voiced frustration with the limited responsibilities of the job, and his relations with Gov. Jerry Brown have been frayed.
The former San Francisco mayor made headlines around the world when he sanctioned same-sex weddings in that city 10 years ago. He ran against Brown early in the Democratic primary for governor in 2010 but abandoned the campaign.
He has hinted that he might run for governor again in 2018.
