Skelton: Sacramento steps up to save the Kings

Without question, Mayor Kevin Johnson has been the central player in the effort to keep the Kings in Sacramento. But it’s also clear, George Skelton says in his Thursday column, that he had an all-star team of high-powered politicos on his side.
For starters, that team has included Senate leader Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), Republican consultant Rob Stutzman and Sacramento lobbyist Darius Anderson.
Their efforts seem poised to achieve a come-from-behind victory for the city.

“It’s now the equivalent of a 15-point lead for Sacramento with one minute to go after a special NBA committee of owners voted unanimously, 7-0, Monday to recommend that the league reject the Kings’ move to Seattle,” Skelton writes. “All the owners — there are 30 — won’t vote until mid-May, but Sacramento’s lead looks insurmountable.”
There’s one person who hasn’t done his part, however, Skelton says.
“Here’s a governor who traveled to China to lure investment to the state, but hasn’t lifted a finger to save an enterprise under his nose that employs more than 800 people and would create 4,000 arena construction jobs,” he writes.
