Letters: War by computer

Re “Data predicted war’s next moves,” July 17
A group of computer experts who used thousands of classified documents on the war in Afghanistan developed a computer model that could predict future outcomes of war in that area. Are we on to something here? Why sacrifice thousands of lives when future wars could be fought on computer grids? The combatants would simply agree to abide by the outcome of the online battles.
The resources saved could then be applied to the task of bettering this planet for everyone. Is that any less sensible than the wars we actually fight, which these days seem never-ending?
