A pact between Republicans and Democrats: If you don’t vote, neither will I

To the editor: A friend of mine is a lifelong Republican who is as disenchanted with the idea of voting for Donald Trump as I, a Democrat, am with the prospect of voting for Hillary Clinton. (“‘Firing squad’ comment draws Clinton campaign rebuke,” July 20)
To spare ourselves our separate indignities, we have made a pact to abstain from voting for president. Each will be spared having to vote for her party’s scoundrel, because we can trust the other to not vote for the other party’s scoundrel.
Perhaps she and I will ride the crest of a wave crashing to the shore of a new national movement: Republicans and Democrats around the country will join hands, mutually agreeing to refuse to say “yes” to that which “no” should be said without fearing that one voter’s “no’ will empower the other’s unconscionable “yes.”
I think we may be onto something.
