Briefs: Van Alphen wins title in Vegas

Sydney Van Alphen of Laguna Beach won the Girls’ 18’s Singles Division championship at the Mike Aggassi No Quit United States Tennis Assn. Regional Championships Oct. 12 in Las Vegas.
In the final, Van Alphen, 16, defeated 2015 National Clay Court Champion Samantha Martinelli (Colorado), the top seed in the 18’s Division, 6-1, 7-5. Van Alphen rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the second set.
Van Alphen is coached by former professional tennis player Guy Fritz.

Bennett takes title
Kathy Bennett, 67, of Laguna Woods, and her team won the 65 and Over Division of the Kitty Godfree Cup last month at the International Tennis Federation Super-Seniors World Team Championships in Umag, Croatia.
Bennett and teammates Kerry Young (Florida), Carol Clay (Florida) and team captain Brenda Carter (South Carolina) defeated Great Britain, 2-1, in the final.
The U.S. also captured the Kitty Godfree Cup last year.
