Thank you, Steve Smith, for stating so well my concerns regarding the
recent actions of the Newport Beach City Council (“Greenlight--A gap
between leaders and residents,” Jan. 22). My husband and I also are
concerned about acceleration of growth in Newport Beach. It seems that
the council is approving too many “exceptions” of the general plan for
our city. We already have severe traffic on Jamboree Road and yet now we
should approve of the plan for the Newport Dunes resort development? And
what about more development by the main library--is it too much to ask
for some open space there? I don’t think so and I do believe that the
Greenlight initiative is an appropriate and necessary response to poorly
controlled growth.

Thank you, [Steve Smith], for putting into words what so many of us
feel. It is my hope that the Greenlight initiative will help to preserve
our quality of life here in Newport Beach.

I just wanted to commend Steve Smith on his marvelous article on
Greenlight. I think he spelled it out in such a way that we can all
understand it. Particularly, saying not all development is bad, to which
he replied, “Just don’t tell me that all development is good.” It was
just excellent. I just wanted to say thank you very much for publishing
the article.
