Stakes are raised as CIF opens

If last week’s smorgasbord of swimming and track and field wasn’t enough to fill your appetite, you’re in luck.

All that clamoring and effort last week set the stage for the CIF Southern Section postseason in both sports. And there’ll be plenty of action to catch.

The kickoff is noon Tuesday when the Division IV swimming preliminaries take place at Belmont Plaza, with Sage Hill School in attendance.

Then there’s three days worth of swimming doubleheaders. Thursday, it’s Estancia and Costa Mesa in the Division III preliminaries at 10 a.m., followed by the Division IV finals at 6 p.m.

Friday, Corona del Mar competes in the Division II prelims at 10 a.m., and the Division I finals at 6 p.m.

Saturday includes the Division III finals at 10 a.m. and the Division II finals at 4 p.m.

For Newport-Mesa track and field aficionados, the main place to be will be Warren High in Downey at 11 a.m. Saturday for the Division III preliminaries. Corona del Mar, Costa Mesa and Estancia will be competing there.

The top eight qualifiers in each event move on to the division finals May 20.
