HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Sunset League

Preview Meet

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High senior Desiree Alexander won the girls’ race in 18 minutes, 4 seconds, helping the Sailors finish second in the team race to Esperanza at Central Park Wednesday.

“This is the best we’ve done at this meet in our three years in the Sunset League,” said Coach Eric Tweit, whose Sailors are ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division II poll. “We never really run that well this early on. This showed that we have a good chance to compete for a league title with Esperanza and Fountain Valley.”

The Sailors almost won the event, but a tiebreaker decided on how the sixth runner did for Newport Harbor and Esperanza favored the Tars.
