High School Football: South roster changes

Corona del Mar High offensive lineman Mitch Dean will miss the 57th edition of the Brea Lions Club Orange County North-South Prep All-Star Football Game for seniors at Orange Coast College on July 8.
Dean, a 6-foot-5, 275-pounder, said he suffered injuries outside of football a couple of weeks ago that will not allow him to play. Sea Kings Coach Dan O’Shea said CdM safety Sutty Barbato is replacing Dean, a two-time Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team selection, on the South All-Star team.
Barbato is a new local addition, as is Estancia defensive end Jason Jones. The two join four other Newport-Mesa players already on the South roster, CdM linebacker Karl Donovan and defensive lineman Joe Anderson, and Newport Harbor offensive lineman Max Spruill and defensive end Elliott Frye.
Barbato earned All-CIF Southern Section Southwest Division and first-team All-Pacific Coast League honors after he finished with 78 tackles, one sack, one interception, one blocked field goal and nine passes defensed. Last year, Barbato, Dean, Donovan and Anderson helped the Sea Kings finish 9-3 overall, go 5-0 in the Pacific Coast League for a fourth straight time and reach the Southwest Division quarterfinals for a second consecutive year.
Jones, who is 6-5 and 215 pounds, is the lone player from the Orange Coast League in the game. He was a two-way standout for the Eagles (3-7, 2-3 in league).
Newport Harbor’s Spruill and Frye made the Daily Pilot Dream Team and All-Sunset League first team. The two went both ways for the Sailors, who went 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the Sunset League.
The six local players start practicing with the South at Laguna Hills High on Monday, from 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The South coach is Mike Maceranka, who took over at Laguna Hills in January.
