Football: Cathedral-Dorsey game is battle in downtown Los Angeles

There are few better views of downtown Los Angeles at night than looking at the skyscrapers from the football stadium at L.A. Cathedral High.

“It’s beautiful,” Cathedral Coach Kevin Pearson said. “You see the L.A. skyline and it’s lit up.”

On Friday night, Cathedral is hosting Dorsey in a rare meeting of a private vs. public school involving both from urban areas.

“It’s a great matchup,” Pearson said. “We’ve been wanting to play a school of that caliber for a long time from the inner city. Paul [Knox] is a friend of mine. He’s kind of a mentor when I first started in the mid-90s. I really appreciate what he does for those kids. It’s going to be exciting to play those guys.”

Cathedral is 3-0 and has been led by sophomore quarterback Andrew Tovar, who has passed for 13 touchdowns. Despite a 1-3 record, Dorsey is considered the favorite in this game, having played a much tougher schedule. The Dons’ defense, led by safety Rayce Williams, will offer a severe test for the Phantoms.
