Football: Loyola, Nico Evans take down Alemany [Video]

The big question coming in to Friday night’s Serra League opener between Loyola and Alemany was whether Alemany’s defense could stop running back Nico Evans?

The answer turned out to be a resounding no.

Evans rushed for 238 yards and scored three touchdowns in Loyola’s 31-20 upset of No. 11-ranked Alemany.

Evans has 12 touchdowns in his last three games and 16 overall.

“If there’s any better running back around, i’d like to see him, because I’d take our guy any day,” Coach Marvin Sanders said.

Loyola, which lost to Harvard-Westlake in its opener, has battled back to be 4-3 under Sanders behind a powerful offensive line that’s creating opportunities for Evans.

Alemany, which started the season 5-0, is now 5-2 and could be in jeopardy of not making the Pac-5 playoffs unless it solves issues with a defense that has given up 274 yards rushing to Cory Young (Norco) and 238 to Evans the last two weeks. Injuries to Quintin Tartabull and Kevin Summers in the second quarter on Friday didn’t help.
