Prep baseball roundup: It’s a day for shutouts

Monday was a day to feature top pitchers in top form throwing shutout after shutout.

In the Trinity League, UCLA-bound Griffin Canning of Santa Margarita struck out 13 in eight innings to outduel Notre Dame-bound Charlie Vorsheck and lead the Eagles past Mater Dei, 1-0. Nick Meyer had the game-winning hit in the eighth.

Ryan Alsworth of Servite threw a three-hitter, striking out three and walking one in Servite’s 2-0 victory over St. John Bosco.

In the East Valley League, Andrew Marmor has been a standout pitcher for North Hollywood since he was a freshman. Now that he’s a senior, he has helped the Huskies move into first place with a 7-1 record after a 3-0 shutout over Chavez. Tyson Turner had three hits.

Gino Brockway threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks in Banning’s 3-0 victory over Apple Valley.

Daniel Rocha improved to 6-1 and struck out 10 in six innings in Narbonne’s 7-0 win over Oak Park. Isac Lepe went four for five with an RB. Scott Savage had two hits.

Spencer Vogelbach threw a two-hitter, striking out nine, in Oaks Christian’s 6-0 win over Rio Mesa.

Now for the non-shutouts.

Orange Lutheran defeated first-place JSerra, 3-2, with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh. Brady Shockey had three hits for JSerra.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Mary Star, 8-7. Bert Gervis had three hits. Matt Lemus had two RBIs.

Sierra Canyon defeated Grace Brethren, 8-4. Alex Crane had three hits and Jake Fried added two hits.
