AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers’ bats are starting to come around. Ivan De Jesus Jr. had three hits, and Rafael Furcal and James Loney each had two. The middle of the lineup also produced. Andre Ethier had a run-scoring double and Matt Kemp tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Hector Gimenez, a longshot to make the roster, homered for the second consecutive game.
ON THE MOUND: Rubby De La Rosa, the Dodgers’ reigning minor league pitcher of the year and spring training talent-show winner, held the Giants scoreless and hitless over four innings. The hard-throwing 22-year-old struck out two, walked three and lowered his spring earned-run average to 1.80. Asked to compare the difficulty of facing major league hitters to the English lessons he receives from translator Kenji Nimura, De La Rosa laughed. “The English class,” he said.
EXTRA BASES: Because the Dodgers wanted to stretch out Ted Lilly in a more controlled environment, they had the left-hander pitch in a Class-A game against the Texas Rangers. Lilly threw 72 pitches over six innings, giving up two runs and seven hits. He struck out six and hit a batter.
