Abner Mares’ fight moved to Staples Center on Nov. 10

Abner Mares will now defend his World Boxing Council super-bantamweight title even closer to home, with Golden Boy Promotions announcing Thursday that it’s moving his title defense against Anselmo Moreno to Staples Center on Nov. 10.

“When Top Rank decided Manny Pacquiao would not fight Nov. 10, that’s a date we wanted,” Golden Boy Chief Executive Richard Schaefer told The Times. “This will be a great card now.”

Hawaiian Gardens’ Mares (24-0-1, 13 knockouts) was supposed to fight Panama’s Moreno (33-1-1, 12 KOs) Oct. 27 at Anaheim’s Honda Center, Schaefer announced last week.

However, Schaefer said the change in date also will help free heavyweight Chris Arreola from Riverside and Mexico’s Alfredo Angulo to appear on the card in separate fights.

Angulo (20-2, 17 KOs) hasn’t fought since losing to super-welterweight James Kirkland by sixth-round technical knockout in November.

The fighter experienced visa problems and was detained for more than eight months in an immigration detention facility in El Centro until last month.

Arreola (35-2, 30 knockouts) hasn’t fought since February after suffering an injury that caused him to withdraw from a June 23 card at Staples.
