Competition in 100 meters could be hot in Southern Section meet

The Southern Section track and field championships are set for Saturday at Mount San Antonio College, and the 100-meter races could be as sizzling as the weather.
Khalfani Muhammad — the defending state champion from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame — continues to be the runner to watch, but there are a lot of competitors closing in, which should push him to keep lowering his times.
In the Division 3 final, Muhammad will face a challenge from Encino Crespi freshman Tarrik Brock, who ran the fastest 100 time by a freshman in state history in the preliminaries at 10.57 seconds.
In the Division 1 final, sophomore Miles Valentine of Upland ran a wind-aided 10.36 seconds at the prelims. All three are expected to make it to next week’s Masters Meet at Cerritos College.
The shotput will feature Nick Ponzio of Temecula Great Oak. He has a best of 69-71/4.
In the girls’ competition, Ariana Washington of Long Beach Poly will be favored in the sprints. Sarah Baxter of Simi Valley, the Gatorade national cross-country athlete of the year, will get to show her distance prowess in the Division 1 3,200.
Field events begin at 11 a.m. and the first running event goes off at 1 p.m.
