Baseball notes: Giants’ Tim Lincecum has cortisone shots in hips
Tim Lincecum has struggled to stay healthy this season.

San Francisco Manager Bruce Bochy said right-hander Tim Lincecum has received cortisone injections in both hips to treat a degenerative condition that is not considered career-threatening. Lincecum, who has been on the DL since June 28 because of a bruised right forearm, had an MRI exam Monday.

Pittsburgh shortstop Jordy Mercer is expected to miss six weeks because of a sprained left knee, leaving the Pirates without their starters on the left side of the infield possibly until September. Third baseman Josh Harrison went on the DL July 7 with a torn left thumb ligament. . . . Atlanta reinstated left-hander Andrew McKirahan from suspension and optioned right-hander Ryan Kelly to triple-A Gwinnett. McKirahan was suspended 80 games after testing positive for the banned substance Ipamorelin. . . . . Cincinnati put left-handed reliever Manny Parra on the DL because of a sore elbow. . . . Kansas City reinstated right-hander Kris Medlen from the DL, returning him to the majors for the first time since his second elbow ligament replacement surgery early last year. Medlen, signed to a two-year contract in December, will begin in the Royals’ bullpen but could join the rotation later in the season.
