Racing (with updated entries)! You’re going to want to get to know this guy

Editor’s note: As the legendary Jim Healy used to play, “Who goofed? I’ve got to know.” Well, that would be us. We accidentally sent out the Saturday entries with the Friday newsletter. So, here’s your correct entries for Friday. Back to your regularly scheduled newsletter.
Hello, my name is John Cherwa, and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter where you get to meet new people all the time.
We thought we would use today to introduce you to someone you might be seeing a lot of in the future. Mick Ruis is the trainer and owner of Bolt d’Oro, the presumptive favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. And you know what that could mean.
He’s been successful at whatever he tries, be it scaffolding or racing. He’s personable and seems to have a good handle on the road ahead of him.
But make sure you say his name right. It’s not pronounced Rue-ez, it’s Rue-is, just like it’s spelled. So, with that, here’s a question-and- answer session about everything but horse racing.
Q & A with Mick Ruis
What’s your favorite TV show that you are currently watching?
That’s easy, “Forensic Files” because it’s on the same channel as HLN and that’s what I watch when I get up at 3 a.m. We usually don’t end up changing the channel.
If you weren’t a trainer or scaffolding magnate, what would you be?
I love to take care of Down syndrome kids. That’s kind of a passion of mine. There is a kid at
What’s your all-time favorite movie?
The movie would be “Phar Lap.” I’m trying to get it on DVD. I cry when I watch it. I still get tears when I watch the Secretariat movie and he wins by 31 lengths. I don’t know why it makes me just choke. But “Phar Lap” is by far my favorite movie.
If you could have lunch or dinner with any person living or dead, who would that be?
I’d like to meet my great grandfather. I never got to meet him. Ruis Canyon in
What’s on the top of your bucket list?
I would say we have this little town where we live (Columbia Falls, Mont.) and before I die, I want to see all the jobs come back. It’s all about creating jobs. They are hard-working people. … I know how that feels wanting to work but there is no work, to have a job.
What’s your favorite food?
That’s easy, pizza. My mom used to say I could eat pizza every day. My favorite is sausage pizza. There was a place that I worked when I was 16 years old and it’s still there. It’s called Marechiaros in El Cajon.
What’s your favorite type of music?
Country by far and I like old-time country. Marty Robbins and those type people, Hank [Williams] Jr. My kids, I used to torture them, at 7:30 at night on Sundays, whenever we were coming back from Hollywood Park or wherever, we had to listen to old-time country music. “No dad,” they would say.
Sad news on retired Effinex
Effinex, a fixture on the graded stakes trail especially in New York, died unexpectedly at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds on Thursday of a ruptured pulmonary artery. He had just moved to the farm a month and a half ago after standing stud this year. He was 7. Effinex won nine of his 28 races and the past few years ran almost nothing but graded stakes races. He was the winner of the Grade 1 Clark Handicap and the he won the Suburban Handicap twice. Eric Mitchell of Bloodhorse has a more complete story. (Read here.)
Spill at Santa Anita
Jockeys Israel Ocampo and Joe Talamo were taken to Huntington Memorial in Pasadena after a two-horse spill in the seventh race. Warrenscrystalized, with Ocampo aboard, was about 30 yards from the finish line in the 6 1/2-furlong race down the hill when he suffered a compound fracture of his left fetlock and fell. Hawk’s Journey, with Talamo, couldn’t avoid the fallen horse and also went down. Warrenscrystalized was euthanized and Hawk’s Journey was uninjured. Both jockeys were taken from the course on stretchers, Ocampo with head and neck injury protocol, while Talamo was sitting up and talking. Both jockeys were conscious and fully ambulatory when they left the track and were released on Thursday night. Talamo was unhurt while Ocampo suffered a broken hand.
Santa Anita preview
Santa Anita has a real workmanlike card on Friday, devoid of stars and filled with the kind of stock that is dominant on the backstretch. Field sizes not as robust as the start of the meet but still pretty good, especially compared to the last meet. So, Santa Anita boss Tim Ritvo has likely, but we’re never sure, told his staff to hold off on printing eviction notices and placing them on some trainers barns. Remember, they’re watching.
There are three turf races, the third, sixth and eighth and no races that say, “I can’t wait for that one.” Some good betting races, for sure, but no stars, although possible stars in the making. Here are the field sizes in race order: 9, 7, 6, 8, 10, 9, 6, 10. The third is 6 ½ furlongs down the hill and might be the centerpiece of the day as an allowance optional claiming race of $62,500 with a purse of $53,000.
Sometimes it’s fun just to read the conditions, even though the convoluted way races are written is very common. It’s like the little-known codicil of Faber College in its complexity. (If you get the reference and want to relive a clip from that great movie. (click here. Warning, some bad language.)
Anyway, it’s for fillies and mares, 3 years and up, who have never won $10,000 twice other than maiden, claiming, starter or a state bred race. Wait, not done, yet. Or have never won three races or an optional claiming price of $62,500. Got it.

EIGHTH RACE: #9 Bee Sweet (6-1)
Jockey Flavien Prat takes over for apprentice Evin Roman going two turns on the grass. This filly shipped back from Golden Gate to Del Mar and showed an improved effort for trainer Neil Drysdale, who is 29% with Prat in 21 races at Santa Anita. Outside post not great, but thinking Prat will head to the rail and mount a charge from there.
Thursday’s result: Aflewency finished third in the seventh race at odds of 5-1.

FIFTH RACE: #3 We Have A Favorite (5-2)
This 2-year-old filly was quick early before strong late with smooth stride in last 12.2 drill for debut. Light Of The Moon, 2-1 ML favorite, is still a maiden after seven starts.
Los Al preview
I hope all of you know that when I write about Los Alamitos, it’s really more like from the track media impresario Orlando
The names to remember are That Rico (winner of four straight), Kiddy Up Cowgirl, Evil Genius and Start Something Bad, all of whom have been derby winners at Los Al. There’s also a couple of interlopers who ran in the All American Derby in New Mexico—Elicity and One Sweet Racy (finished second). The 10 fastest times will make it to the Derby final on Nov. 12 and that winner will get a free pass to the Champion of Champions on Dec. 16.
Sunday night will have its entire 10 races devoted to trails to the $938,850 Golden State Million (or should it be $938,850?) Futurity. That final is Nov. 5. Quick note, congrats to the connections — and the horse — Heza Dasha Fire, who by winning the Robert L. Boniface Invitational Championship on Sunday, became the seventh horse in the 75-year history of the American Quarter Horse Assn. to earn more than $2 million.

JILL MADDEN sped to the early lead, set all the pace along the inside, kicked away on the second turn and drew off under a couple left handed cracks of the whip and a long hold late. ZANAB three deep into the first turn, stalked off the rail or outside a rival, went between horses on the second turn and three wide into the stretch and held the place. HONOR MAKER broke out a bit, pulled and steadied into the first turn, tugged his way along off the rail into the backstretch to chase the pace, angled in entering the stretch, lacked room off heels in midstretch, came out a bit past the eighth pole and split horses late for third. SASSY ASHLEY close up stalking the winner a bit off the rail, continued between foes leaving the second turn and through the stretch and was edged for the show.
