Support drops for Boston’s Olympic bid

Bostonians seem less and less thrilled with the idea of hosting the Summer Olympics.
A March poll conducted by WBUR suggests that only 36% of registered voters in the metropolitan area support their city’s bid for the 2024 Games. That number has slipped from 44% in February and 51% in January.
Boston won the right to be the sole American bidder in a close competition against Los Angeles last year.
“After one of our worst ever winters, we know that we need to be out across the city and the state over the forthcoming days, weeks and months to build support and make the case that the 2024 Games would leave an extremely positive legacy for generations to come,” Rich Davey, the bid committee’s chief executive, was quoted as saying.
The International Olympic Committee will not vote on a host city until 2017.
“It’s still early in the process, and while we would be pleased to see full support across the board, we recognize that it will take time and effort to successfully answer the important questions being raised by Bostonians,” said Scott Blackmun, chief executive of the U.S. Olympic Committee.
