Wise Dan will miss Breeders’ Cup Mile after injury

Wise Dan, the two-time Horse of the Year, won’t be able to run in the Breeders’ Cup Mile because of a non-displaced fracture at the bottom of the cannon bone of the right front fetlock, the Breeders’ Cup announced on Monday.
The Breeders’ Cup is set for Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.
The 7-year-old gelding won the Shadwell Turf Mile on Oct. 4 in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Wise Dan has won 23 of 31 races, including 11 Grade I stakes and more than $7.5 million in earnings.
“We won’t decide if he will return to training until we see if he heals perfectly, because he has nothing left to prove,” owner Morton Fink said in a statement. “This is not a fracture that can be helped with surgery; he has to heal it on his own.”
