Catalina: 1908 Tuna Club open for tours Saturday

Walk in the footsteps of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, movie director Cecil B. DeMille and actors Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel on Saturday when Catalina’s exclusive Tuna Club opens for tours.
The Avalon-based club, over 100 years old, is credited with originating the sport of big-game fishing and counts many famous anglers among its former members. It opens to the public one day annually for tours to raise money for the Catalina Island Museum.
“We are excited to be able to offer such an exclusive opportunity to our members and the community of Avalon,” said Michael De Marsche, Catalina Island Museum executive director. “The preservation of island history is an important link between the museum and the Tuna Club. ”
Mike Rivkin, author of several fishing books and past president of the Tuna Club, will conduct the tours this year, sharing the history of the club and its role in the birth of sport fishing, and offering a look at the club’s collection of angling artifacts and trophies.
“The Tuna Club prides itself on being one of Avalon’s oldest and most civic-minded institutions,” Rivkin said. “We have partnered with the Catalina Island Museum because we share the museum’s commitment to history.”
Tours will be at 2 and 3 p.m.; tickets are $30 for members of the museum and $35 for the public.
