Gear: Compact projector turns almost any surface into a big screen

Like watching everything on a big screen? Here’s a way to take along (or more accurately, create) a big screen from a small package wherever you roam.
The BEM Wireless Kickstand HD Projector is a portable projector that swivels out of its own integrated combined handle, carrying case and A-frame stand — all in an 8 1/4-by-7 1/2-by1 1/2-inch-deep package. It weighs about 2 pounds.
The Kickstand can project an image onto a surface (such as a wall) as close as a foot or as far away as 10 feet, creating a viewable screen size of from 9 to 90 inches diagonally. You get 720p HD video output; resolution is a respectable 1,280 by 800 — not at all bad for the diminutive size, and the background buzz sound is low.
The projector has HDMI and USB inputs and a 3.5 mm auxiliary out jack. Included are a 3.5 mm cable, HDMI cable, wall power adapter and soft carry case. There’s a decent built-in mono speaker, but you’ll get louder, more dramatic sound by hooking up to your laptop’s stereo speakers.
Info: BEM Wireless Kickstand HD Projector costs $499.99.
