Deal: Thompson Hotels coming to Cabo San Lucas with 20% opening discount

The Thompson Hotels chain is coming to Mexico with a new hotel called The Cape near Cabo San Lucas. The resort is set to open June 19, about a week later than planned. With the opening comes a 20% discount on rooms and some nice extras too.

It's located near Monuments Beach and it makes this scenic boast: Each room offers views of El Arco, the area's landmark feature across the bay from the hotel.

Some of the wow factors: a signature kitchen called Manta, run by chef Enrique Olvera, who has had a hit with Pujol in Mexico City; a sunken, roof-top lounge with a fire pit; an infinity pool with swim-up bar; and -- of course -- a quiet beach.

The Thompson Hotel brand is slated to open its second Mexican hotel in Playa del Carmen in the fall.

The offer is good through the end of July for stays through the end of October.

Tested

I found availability July 17 to 20 for $239 a night that adds $114 in VAT tax, $21 in lodging tax and $107 in service fees. Still, the base rate for the new resort is discounted, as promised. The same room on the same dates without the package would cost $299 a night excluding tax and fees.
