Sign-ups begin Monday for a pilot after-school child-care and tutoring program at 10 elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The program, which begins Oct. 3, will provide supervised activities from the close of school until 6 p.m. every school day for 200 children at each school.
The schools chosen for the initial phase of the program, which is jointly sponsored by the City of Los Angeles and the district, are Ann Street, Canoga Park, Hawaiian Avenue, Hobart Boulevard, Logan Street, Manchester Avenue, Sylmar, Utah Street, Weigand Avenue and Westminster Avenue.
According to district youth services coordinator Durrell Maughan, the program will offer homework assistance, library visits, arts and science education and recreation. It is free and open to all children. Enrollment will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
