Grants Announced for Study Abroad

Two seniors at Occidental College and one at Claremont McKenna College are among 76 students selected by the Thomas H. Watson Foundation for grants to support study and travel abroad.
The program supports a year of study and experience in a field in which the student has demonstrated the potential for leadership.
Gretchen Kuhner, a diplomacy and world affairs major at Occidental, will study the economic impact of industrial homework in Mexico, India and the Dominican Republic.
Cleber Ouverney, a biology major at Occidental, will study the ethnobotany of medicinal plants in the Amazon areas of Peru, Ecuador, Brazil and Bolivia.
Ivan Svitek, a government major at Claremont McKenna, will produce a photo journal of Eastern Europeans in refugee camps in Austria, England and Germany. Svitek and his family defected from Czechoslovakia in 1984.
