Parents Protest School District Busing Policy

Angry parents this week continued to protest the planned elimination of 22 middle and high school bus stops in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.
More than 30 parents attended a board meeting, denouncing the new busing policy, which would affect 700 of the 3,500 students bused each day.
Parents said some students would be forced to walk up to 4 miles down busy streets to school. “What were [trustees] thinking of?” asked Susan Reese, a Valencia High School parent.
Trustee Roseann Thorn agreed that the busing policy needs more work, and Assistant Supt. Kim Stallings said officials are already checking areas deemed problematic due to long walking distances.
The district approved the policy in August in efforts to reduce the $1.5-million cost for busing.
The policy, set to begin in January, will return to the board for further consideration Nov. 18.
