12 Schools to Receive 90 Portable Classrooms

A dozen Compton schools will receive new portable classrooms to replace buildings up to 50 years old, the head of the city’s school district announced Thursday.
A state grant of $5 million will buy 90 new bungalows to be divided among Emerson, Foster, Kelly, King, Laurel, Mayo, McKinley, McNair, Roosevelt and Rosecrans elementary schools within the next six months, said Randolph E. Ward, state administrator for the troubled school district. Roosevelt Middle School and Dominguez High also are expected to receive new portables.
The Compton Unified School District, under state receivership since it went bankrupt in 1993, is asking for an additional $42 million from the state to refurbish 25 campuses.
