IRVINE

While the Irvine Unified School District continues to lead the county in scores on standardized exams such as the Stanford 9 and SAT, teachers told the Board of Education on Tuesday that this was not enough to find out what kids really know.

“More complex and essential tasks need to have more complex types of assessments,” said Val Henry, a teacher at South Lake Middle School.

Together with six other teachers in the district, Henry has worked on the project to find a new testing method for the last three years.

So far, about 200 of the district’s teachers in 26 schools have participated in the Classroom Evidence Institute, a one-day seminar funded by a $70,000 state grant.
