Math Test for Adults
Your Dec. 1 article, “Questions Raised on Graduation Test,” noted that many school officials believe that the current proposed exam is too long and difficult. I support the idea that a high school diploma ought to mean that a student meets basic competency standards. However, the sample math problems I’ve seen go well beyond basic competency.
I suggest that the current version of the test be given to a cross-section of successful adults in various walks of life. If, as I suspect, few people will score well on the math portions, this will be a good indication that the test reflects the influence of the math teachers’ lobby rather than any real need for high school graduates to be able to solve the problems.
