SAT Abuse

Re “Braking Abuse of SAT,” editorial, Jan 11: The SAT is just one example of how economically disadvantaged students can be educationally disadvantaged. Not only are children from low-income backgrounds unlikely to be able to afford private SAT preparation courses or bribable psychologists but they are also unlikely to receive the same K-12 education as a child who attends a public school in a wealthier neighborhood.
As California embarks on a new millennium, in an era without affirmative action and at a point in history when economic mobility is dependent upon education, it is time for California to focus on investing in economically disadvantaged school districts and take concrete steps toward leveling the playing field.
