A fierce defender of public education

John Liechty (obituary, Jan. 4) was not just my boss, he was my hero. He worked tirelessly day after day, hour after hour, well or sick, for the students in our city.
He fiercely believed in public education, the Los Angeles Unified School District and keeping young people connected to their school, their home and their community.
He always told it like it is without any regard to how it might affect his future or career. And he expected everyone to perform miracles for the students -- and in his Beyond the Bell Branch, we did.
There is now a huge silence where his voice once boomed. Is there another hero out there to take his place and be a voice for the children?
